Half the Sky: 3 ways to help empower women around the world

It was funny how this morning I decided to press play on the new Marie Forleo TV episode.

I really want to press play every im a new one comes out, but my time is so stretched I have just never been able to. But this morning I did.

The Universe always delivers you the perfect message at the perfect time.

I started this blog because I wanted to help empower women. I just haven’t really known how to go about that, and I still don’t know! It’s been really bothering me and I’ve even considered just throwing it in altogether because I just don’t feel I can get my shit together enough to do it.

Funny I can’t get my shit together but I want to help empower women- see my brain is all messed up!!

Any way this video this morning reaffirmed for me just how important this is. Studies show that the world is so much better off when women are empowered. Think about your own family life, who is really holding it all together? Who is the strength, the back bone, the problem solver, the facilitator, the moulder, the nurturer?

I’d say most of the time its the mother. Now this is not to say that men do not contribute, they do in so many important ways. And every family needs to have that strong male who can do the things we women can’t.

It’s not a competition as to who is better than who, it’s more about the ying and the yang and special roles we need to fulfill based on our DNA.

The problem is women have only just been stepping out of the dark ages, ie oppression, since the 60’s to claim more rights to create that better world for all.

An even bigger problem is that there are millions  of women around the world now who are still horribly oppressed. The equality and empowerment of women and girls is truly the moral, economic and humanitarian issue of our time. In order for our world to be better we need to do more to help these women. Remember statistics and studies show that the world is better off when women are empowered.

Do you really think there would be wars if women were in control of world affairs? It’s just not in our nature to take life away, its in our nature to enable it to thrive.

Marie talks about Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, the widely acclaimed book by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn, which has now been turned into a documentary, you can see online on PBS for free for the next week. Or you can purchase the book on Amazon at  Half the Sky.

You can read more on the Half the Sky website or on Marie Forleo TV.

I love how Marie talks about the simple steps we can take to make a difference. We often think the problems are so big we couldn’t every really make a difference so we don’t try.

It’s actually much simpler and I love how Marie breaks it down into three simple steps that I believe so much in and practice every day.

Half the sky: empowering women

1. Work on yourself

You will never be able to truly help someone unless you have worked on yourself first. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Be the light of change so the flame that lives in others may be reignited just by your example of living an empowered and inspired life.

This is the most powerful way to change the world, so take those steps to become an empowered woman today. Fulfill your own potential and take advantage of the  amazing opportunities that pass by you every day- more than millions of women around the world could ever dream about.

2. Use your voice

I started my blogs because I felt I had a voice that needed to be used. EAch of us does and it should be used for its specific purpose. You need to figure that out. But you can use your voice through your family and friend network and social channels today by spreading the world about Half the Sky. Just invite people to learn more about it. Very simple!

3. Get engaged

Choose an organization to get engaged in, either make a donation, learn more about it, volunteer or spread the word.

I think I have been really good at doing 1 and 2 in my life, but have lacked contributing with the third. I am going to make an effort to do more to get engaged with these issues. I’m going to put the energy out their to attract the right thought patterns into my life to find ways to most effectively use my voice to do this.

I hope you’ll join me today in doing any one of these three things, or all of them to help empower women around the world and change it for the better. We can do this because we are powerful beyond measure.

Let me know in the comments below how you have become more empowered in your life and how you intend to use your voice? I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions as it could help me to figure out just how to use my own voice more effectively. Maybe you could give me some insight into the direction I should take my blog and podcast.

I so heart your sentiments in empowering women. It’s amazing even in this day and age and in first world countries, how we are still often second class citizens without much of a voice. Having lived in countries like The Philippines and Nepal, it becomes even more evident, and on many occasions I’ve been truly humbled by womens’ endeavours. Your endeavour through your blog is a great way to reach people, perhaps ask them to reach out to others too? Great post, Caz 🙂

Great idea Jo. I’m going to find a way to highlight more things like this and give people the opportunity to reach out too.
