Thought of the Week: Control or Trust

Every Sunday I present a new thought of the week. Something to get you thinking about life and your place in it.

This week’s thought of the week is

Do you push the elevator button more than once?  Do you really believe it makes the elevator faster?

Do you push the elevator button more than once

Losing control? Photo: bogenfreund

Oh my goodness. Quite a silly question, but one that can really show a lot about yourself once you take time to answer it.

I do push the elevator more than once. When I think about it, I really don’t think it will make it go faster, but at the time I do.

I think that is revealing my lack of patience when it comes to dealing with things outside of my control. I have a lack of faith also that things are going to happen when they are meant to happen, so I try to speed it up and force it to work to my grand plans and time schedules instead.

Oh no! I think I must be a control freak!!

Lesson learned from this simple question: Take a step back and trust in things to work exactly as they are meant to work.

How do you control the elevator button and what are your thoughts on what this reveals about yourself?

Hehe i do this too! And with the lights when crossing the road although theres a few sets of lights in Adelaide that if you push the button 10 times the lights will change every time! Pretty awesome huh? Lol
I do it because im impatient too dont worry and most times i know it wont get me anywhere quicker but its an impulsive habit

I don’t press the elevator button more than once but God I press the hell out of the pedestrian button while waiting for the little green man at intersections! I know it doesn’t make the lights change any faster but at least I feel I’m doing something to make it happen. I am definitely a control freak and do have problems trusting that things outside of my control will work properly…I am trying to be more relaxed but it is definitely still a work in progress!

I continually press the pedestrian button too. I think it does make you feel like you are doing something about it. We can all try this week to just let it go and leave the elevator and pedestrian buttons alone.

    Hi Caz

Nice observation! Like the pedestrian light, I do press the elevator button a couple of times! I do it, because of my need to check and double check my own work. Letting go, is something I worked on a lot in preparation for child birth. It’s an amazing thing, to be able to just let go and just trust the process.

    Thank you for sharing 🙂

child birth can certainly teach you about letting go! I’ll be relearning that in a couple of months!!

Great question. I think for most of us that have to press the button more than once it is just another way for us to at least feel like we have some semblance of control. Despite wanting to trust in many things I always find that those times when we have absolutely no control to be the most challenging. I do try to hand over some of this trust more now particularly where my kids are involved so they can learn to trust in themselves, grow independent and build their resilience.

I hate not having that control. I am okay with it with Kalyra. I am happy to let go and have her develop that independence, but if it is about things I want to happen in my life that I can’t control. I struggle with it. I’m trying to let go.

    Hi Caz

I used to push it more than once until I saw an Ellen skit years ago on the original show of hers.
It was hilarious and about pushing the button more than once.

Since then it’s once only for me (same as the pedestrian traffic light crossing 🙂
